In cold climates, pipe insulation maintains fluid temperatures above the point where hydrate or paraffin formation can occur, resulting in restricted or blocked flow and reduced production.  Insulation also reduces steel temperature variation in the freeze and thaw cycle which could result in increased movement of the pipe causing buckling and cracking.
